Travel Clinics: Everything You Need to Know

Planning a trip abroad?

Travelling abroad brings excitement – new cultures, cuisines, and adventures. But as with all adventures, preparing and protecting your health for the journey before you jet off is important.

Our Travel Clinic in Enfield helps you travel safely and confidently with personalised advice and all the travel vaccines you might need.

Prevention is better than cure – when you get the right vaccines before your trip, you can focus on making memories, not managing illnesses.

What is a Travel Clinic?

A travel clinic specialises in travel health, offering expert guidance on health risks abroad – especially vaccines and preventative medications.

All healthcare professionals have their own areas of expertise and specialisms. Our travel clinic has pharmacists who specialise and keep up-to-date on all the latest healthcare requirements for travelling abroad, giving you personalised travel health advice based on your travel plans and pre-existing health needs.

Different Travellers for Different Needs

Every traveller and destination poses different risks: a two-week beach holiday in Spain doesn’t carry the same risks as a month-long backpacking trek through rural Asia. A 21-year-old going cycling in France has different travel health risks to a 60-year-old on a Pacific Island cruise.

By discussing where you’re going, when, and what you’re doing, we tailor recommendations based on you. You can’t get that from a Google search.

Personalised advice makes a difference, especially if your plans include rural travel, extended trips, or working closely with local communities – all of which increases risk of exposure to certain diseases.

Our pharmacists keep up-to-date on global health advisories (like disease outbreaks or vaccine entry requirements) giving you the most relevant guidance.

When you visit our clinic, you’ll receive the right vaccines and health precautions for your trip, not a generic checklist.

What to Expect at Your Travel Clinic Appointment

Booking a travel clinic appointment at Aldermans Pharmacy?

We keep your experience simple, informative, and reassuring.

Here’s a step-by-step look at a typical visit:

  1. Travel Health Consultation: First up, a friendly chat about your travel plans.

Which countries (and specific regions) are you visiting? How long will you be abroad?

Are you trekking through rural villages, staying in city hotels, or maybe going on safari?

We’ll also review your medical history and any past vaccinations.

This quick chat helps us identify what health risks your trip poses and which vaccines (or other precautions) are recommended.

  2. Personalised Recommendations: Based on your itinerary and personal health profile, our pharmacist will recommend specific travel vaccines and health measures.

Heading to certain tropical regions? We might advise Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines (for food and water-borne diseases).

Spending time outdoors in rural Southeast Asia? We might suggest Japanese Encephalitis vaccine, or remind you about malaria prevention.

We’ll also check your routine UK vaccinations (like tetanus, diphtheria, and polio) are up-to-date – travellers should be current on these as well.

All advice is tailored to you: two people on the same trip might even get different guidance if one is, say, pregnant, or has a chronic condition.

  3. Getting Your Vaccines: Once you’re happy with the plan, we administer the required travel vaccines right here in the pharmacy.

Our clinic stocks a full range of vaccines, so you won’t need to go elsewhere. Some vaccines are just a single injection, while others require a course of multiple doses.

For instance, the rabies vaccine involves 3 injections over 28 days, and Hepatitis B typically involves 3 shots over several weeks.

Don’t worry – we’ll run it all through with you during your consultation, ensuring you’re fully protected on time. (Short on time before travel? Accelerated schedules are possible – we’ll explain what’s feasible.)

We maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness. Most injections are done in the upper arm and take only a moment.

  4. Health Advice & Preventative Care: During your appointment, we do more than just give shots. We’ll provide practical and relevant travel health advice for your trip.

Things like tips on avoiding mosquito bites (important to prevent malaria and other illnesses), food and water safety (to prevent stomach bugs like cholera), and how to handle minor ailments abroad.

If you need anti-malarial tablets, we can advise on the right medication and dosage and help you obtain it. Our goal is that you leave not only vaccinated but informed – with plenty of tips to stay healthy abroad.

  5. Documentation & Certificates: After receiving your vaccines, we document them for you. You’ll get a vaccination record detailing the shots you’ve had. For certain vaccines, you’ll also receive official certificates. For example, if you get a Yellow Fever vaccine, we will issue you the International Certificate of Vaccination (ICVP) – a yellow booklet that some countries will ask to see as proof at the border. (Some countries require proof of yellow fever or polio vaccination upon entry, and Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningitis vaccination for Hajj pilgrims.) Rest assured, we handle all the paperwork so you have the documents you need for a hassle-free journey.

  6. Follow-Up: We’ll remind you of any follow-up boosters if needed (for instance, hepatitis A requires a booster 6–12 months later for long-term protection, and tick-borne encephalitis has a booster schedule over a year.

Even if your travel is done, it’s wise to complete vaccine series for future protection.

Throughout the appointment, please ask any questions you have – no question is too small. We love empowering our patients with knowledge about their health.

By the end of your visit, you’ll have a clear understanding of each vaccine you received, why you needed it, and how to take care of yourself during your travels.

You’ll walk out the door vaccinated and confident, ready to enjoy your trip with peace of mind.

When to Book Your Travel Vaccines (And Last-Minute Trips)

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is “When should I get my travel vaccines?”

The answer? 6 to 8 weeks before your trip, if you can. Here’s why earlier is better:

  • Some vaccines need time to take effect. Your immune system can take a week or two after a shot to build up enough protection. For example, the Hepatitis A vaccine reaches effective levels about 2 weeks after the first dose, and yellow fever vaccination needs 10 days to be effective (and for the certificate to be valid). If you get vaccinated too close to your departure, you might be traveling before you’re fully protected.

  • Certain vaccines involve multiple doses spread out over weeks or months. If you need those, you’ll want enough lead time to complete as much of the series as possible.

For instance, completing the 3-dose rabies series over 28 days is ideal; starting that a week before your flight won’t get you full protection (you’d only get one dose in). Similarly, Japanese Encephalitis is two doses over 28 days. Starting early ensures you can get all required doses on schedule.

  • Peace of mind: Getting your vaccines sorted well in advance is one less thing to worry about as your trip nears. You’ll have time to deal with any minor side effects and know you’re covered.

Last-minute trips

We know travel plans aren’t always made 2 months in advance.

People book last-minute trips, or sometimes you simply don’t realise you needed a vaccine until shortly before leaving.

Don’t panic!

Our travel clinic can still help you on short notice. Even if you’re leaving in a week or less, it’s worth it to get an appointment. Here’s what we can do for last-minute travelers:

Accelerated Schedules

Some vaccines can be given on a faster schedule if needed. Hepatitis B, for example, has an accelerated 21-day course (3 doses in 3 weeks) for those who need it urgently. We can also start a course and often give you partial protection – every dose helps. The typhoid vaccine, while ideally given a month before, can be given even a day or two before travel if necessary – it’s certainly better than no protection at all. Our pharmacists will make sure you get as much protection as possible in the time you have.

Immediate Effect Vaccines

Some vaccines confer a good level of protection even from a single dose. Hepatitis A, for instance, gives a high degree of protection from that first shot (the second dose mainly extends the duration of immunity).

So even last-minute, getting that first dose will protect you during your trip and you can always get the booster when you’re back. In other words, it’s never too late to get at least some protection.

Preventative Travel Advice

If there isn’t enough time to complete a vaccine series or if a certain vaccine can’t be given (e.g., you’re leaving tomorrow and there’s no time for it to work), we’ll focus even more on preventative advice.

e.g. , Couldn’t get the Japanese Encephalitis shots? We’ll stress mosquito avoidance measures.

Couldn’t start rabies pre-exposure? We’ll tell you what to do if you have an animal encounter abroad.

You won’t leave empty-handed – you’ll have knowledge and strategies to stay safe.

Last-Minute Essentials

Anything you suddenly need? Mosquito repellents, water purification tablets? Think of it as a crash course and a one-stop shop in travel health for the spontaneous traveler – we’ll get you geared up as best as possible.

The bottom line?

Always check if you might need travel vaccines as soon as you know you’ll be traveling. And whenever you find out – early or late – give us a call. We’ll figure out the next steps together.

(For specific timing questions or unusual situations, see our FAQ section below – we address some common concerns like “What if I’m pregnant?” or “Do I really need all these vaccines?”.)

Travel Vaccines FAQ

Here are some of the most common questions we hear from travellers. Whether you’re flying soon or just starting to plan your trip, this information can help you feel confident and protected.

How far in advance should I get travel vaccines?

Try to book your travel vaccines around 6–8 weeks before your trip. Some vaccines need time to take effect, and others require multiple doses.

If your departure is sooner, don’t worry. Vaccines like typhoid still offer health benefits when given just a few days before travel. Even one dose is better than none.

As soon as you know you’re travelling, book your appointment at our Enfield travel clinic. Early is best, but late is better than never.

Which travel vaccines do I need for my trip?

That depends on your destination, length of stay, and what you’ll be doing.

Our pharmacist will look at where you’re going and recommend vaccines based on the local risks — like hepatitis A for food safety, yellow fever for jungle travel, or rabies if you’re heading rural.

Use the NHS Fit For Travel tool to get a quick idea, then book your consultation to tailor the plan to your trip.

Are travel vaccines mandatory?

Most travel vaccines aren’t legally required — but some are.

Countries like Ghana or Brazil may require a yellow fever certificate. Saudi Arabia requires the meningitis ACWY vaccine for Hajj and Umrah. Some regions expect polio boosters, too.

We’ll advise you on what’s mandatory for entry and what’s recommended for your health. Either way, it’s better to be protected than unprepared.

Do I have to pay for travel vaccines, or are they free?

At Aldermans Travel Clinic, we provide all vaccines in one convenient place, with transparent pricing. Head to our Travel Vaccines page for a full cost breakdown of the main vaccinations.

Can I get travel vaccines if I’m pregnant or have a health condition?

Yes — in many cases. Experts consider some vaccines, like hepatitis A or tetanus, safe during pregnancy. They usually avoid others, like yellow fever, unless the risk of disease is high.

If you’re pregnant, immunocompromised, or managing a condition, we’ll assess your situation and coordinate with your GP if required. You still have options – we’ll help you find the safest way to protect yourself while you travel.

What are the side effects of travel vaccines?

Most people experience only mild side effects — like a sore arm, tiredness, or a low fever for a day or two.

We’ll talk you through what to expect for each vaccine. If you’ve had allergies in the past (like to egg), let us know. We’ll guide you carefully and make sure you feel confident before and after your jab.

Overall, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Side effects usually fade fast — but the protection lasts long after your trip ends.

Do travel vaccines guarantee I won’t get sick?

Vaccines don’t offer 100% immunity guarantees, but they greatly reduce your risk of serious illness.

Vaccines like yellow fever or hepatitis A offer strong protection. Others (like typhoid) work best when combined with common-sense precautions like safe food and clean water.

We’ll provide advice alongside your vaccines, so you have a complete safety plan for your destination.
